Text-based roleplay rules & standards
Use these rules when writing scenes and preparing your membership application. Explain the principles in your own words and ask for help when something is unclear.
Create opportunities for other writers as well as your own character. A believable setback can move a story forward. Do not change established facts, ignore injuries or leave a scene simply to avoid an unwanted outcome. Keep disagreements about the writing separate from your character’s feelings. Respect other members, avoid harassment, and work in good faith.
In character (IC) is what your character experiences and can reasonably know. Out of character (OOC) is information you learn as a player, such as Discord messages, private conversations, usernames or another character’s profile. Metagaming means using OOC information to influence IC actions. Establish a believable IC source before your character acts on information; do not invent one after the event.
Powergaming includes forcing another character’s actions or outcomes and giving your own character unrealistic abilities. Describe an attempt when another player’s response matters. Let that player respond before deciding whether a contested action succeeds, unless the outcome has already been agreed or resolved by staff. Play injuries, fear, fatigue and limitations consistently. Use /me for your character’s actions and /do for observable circumstances or clarification, without using either to control someone else’s character.
Deathmatching is attacking or killing a character without sufficient IC motivation and development. A minor insult alone does not justify lethal violence. Revenge killing means returning to retaliate using knowledge your character lost through a death or staff-directed reset. Respect the outcome and any memory limits set for the scene. If the effect of a death is unclear, ask staff before returning to the conflict; do not assume knowledge or permission to retaliate.
Do not answer a suspected rule break with another rule break or an OOC argument. If it is safe and possible, continue playing in good faith while preserving the relevant context. Ask for a brief clarification or pause if consent or the scene’s outcome is unclear. For harassment or uncomfortable content, you may disengage and seek help. Use the player reports forum for alleged violations and Support for guidance. Include the scene, relevant messages and a factual explanation. Staff decide disputed outcomes; do not punish the other player yourself.
Give your character a believable background, present motivation, limitations and room to change. Avoid unexplained expertise, guaranteed victories or a finished life story with no possibilities for development. Write clear actions, dialogue and reactions. Distinguish what is observable from internal thoughts. End a scene contribution with room for another writer to respond instead of deciding their reply or the entire outcome.
Write application answers and scenes yourself. You may consult these rules and use spelling or grammar checks, but do not submit copied answers or AI-generated or AI-rewritten responses. We assess your understanding and your own writing, not perfect English or years of experience. Explain your reasoning in your own words. Ask Support if a rule or question is unclear rather than requesting an application answer from another member.
An application assesses your readiness for Leonida’s text-based roleplay community. Approval does not create a character, grant an in-game whitelist or promise a launch date. Application writing stays attached to your OOC account. Character profiles and name reservations are separate processes; a reserved name is not a playable character.
The application uses practical scenarios and a character-writing sample. We assess your reasoning, respect for other writers and willingness to learn.
